On the 10th Day of Christmas: Lessons Learned in 2017

London Bridge Plastic Surgery Attack

London Bridge Plastic Surgery Hack

The 5th lesson we have to learn today looks a different type of attack. Previously, we have looked at how cybercriminals have accessed big companies in order to steal data, to can subsequently use maliciously. Of course, this is of a similar nature, but in a very different way. In October 2017, the London Bridge Plastic Surgery announced they had been contacted by well-known hacking group, “The Dark Overlord”.
They revealed they had several pieces of data, including patients names and more distressing – the before and after photos of many clients. It is shocking as the surgery specialises in breast enlargements and genital surgery. It is likely the group chose this surgery as a result of the high profile clients it attracts, including the likes of Katie Price and according to the hackers, the royal family.

The Dark Overlord are not new to the hacking game having previously attacked other surgeries in America and more famously Netflix. They terrorised the media giant earlier in the year after gaining access to the new season of Orange is the New Black. This is where this hack differs. It is very organised. A group of entrepreneurial activity; they demand ransom payments in return for not releasing the data they have pulled from the company. The group are known for mocking their victims.

It just goes to show that the motive behind every cyberattack is different, proving once again that no business is safe from the potential threat of a cyber attack.
